BonoLoto

BonoLoto was created in 1988 as SELAE's budget game — the "bono" is the discount, not a bonus — and its whole design follows from the price.

**The bet is €0.50**, the lowest face price of any game we cover: half a La Primitiva line, a third of an El Gordo bet, a tenth of a Mega Millions ticket. The one wrinkle is that SELAE requires a ticket of at least €1, so a single-draw ticket carries a minimum of two combinations; one combination is allowed only when the ticket enters more than one draw that week.

**The matrix is the full-fat one.** Six numbers from 49, identical to La Primitiva's — so the jackpot odds are the same 1 in 13,983,816. Nothing about the low price makes the game easier or harder; what it changes is the prize pool.

**The draws are daily.** BonoLoto ran Monday to Saturday for decades; on 25 September 2022 SELAE added Sunday, making it the only major Spanish draw held every single day. A weekly ticket — the same numbers in all seven draws — costs €3.50.

Small stakes, small pools: BonoLoto jackpots typically sit in the hundreds of thousands to low millions, and that is the honest trade against its big-jackpot siblings.

BonoLoto has five prize categories plus the refund, computed here from the official 6/49 matrix:

• 1ª categoría — 6 numbers — 1 in 13,983,816 — jackpot
• 2ª categoría — 5 + Complementario — 1 in 2,330,636
• 3ª categoría — 5 numbers — 1 in 55,491
• 4ª categoría — 4 numbers — 1 in 1,032
• 5ª categoría — 3 numbers — 1 in 57 — a fixed €4
• Reintegro — the refund digit alone — 1 in 10 — your €0.50 stake back

**The Complementario** is a seventh ball drawn from the 43 left in the machine. It has no bearing on the jackpot; its only job is to upgrade a five-number match into the second category.

**The Reintegro** is a digit from 0 to 9 printed on your ticket rather than chosen. Match it alone and your stake is refunded — which is why the overall chance of getting something back is about 1 in 10, and why most BonoLoto "wins" are fifty cents coming home.

The four categories above the fixed €4 tier are pari-mutuel — each takes a share of the prize fund and splits it among that day's winners — so amounts move with sales. Note one difference from La Primitiva: BonoLoto has **no Categoría Especial**. The six numbers alone win the whole jackpot; the Reintegro is never part of the top prize. An unwon BonoLoto jackpot rolls to the next daily draw with no cap, exactly like its siblings. What keeps the totals modest is arithmetic: €0.50 stakes feed a smaller pool, and a draw every single day means someone usually hits the six numbers before a roll gets far.

Which is what makes the record interesting. On **17 January 2024** a single ticket validated in **Lorca (Murcia)** took **€10,614,853** — the first BonoLoto bote ever to clear ten million euros, 36 years after the game launched. The previous best, €7.7 million, had stood since December 2018.

For perspective, La Primitiva has paid €101.7 million and El Gordo €33 million. BonoLoto is not the game you play for a headline jackpot; it is the game you play for a daily draw at pocket-change stakes, where even the routine botes of one or two million are four-hundred-thousand-fold returns on a fifty-cent bet.

BonoLoto prizes fall under Spain's gravamen especial (Ley 16/2012), the same regime as La Primitiva, El Gordo and the Christmas lottery: the first **€40,000** of a prize is exempt outright, and 20% is withheld only on the amount above it.

For BonoLoto specifically, that threshold does almost all the work. The realistic outcomes — the €4 three-number prize, the €0.50 Reintegro, a pari-mutuel 4ª win — sit so far below €40,000 that effectively every prize an ordinary player ever collects arrives untouched. Even a healthy 2ª categoría win usually clears in full. Only a bote crosses the line: on the record €10.6 million, the first €40,000 was exempt and 20% was withheld on the rest.

SELAE applies the withholding when it pays, wherever the winner lives. A non-resident may be able to reclaim some of it under their country's double-taxation treaty with Spain, normally via a Modelo 210 filing — a question worth a Spanish adviser's time on a jackpot and plainly not on a €4 win.

SELAE runs all three weekly-or-better draw games, the names get tangled, and a reader looking for one routinely lands on another. The short version:

**BonoLoto** — this game. 6 from 49, drawn every day, €0.50 a bet, jackpots usually modest (record €10.6 million). The pick for frequency and price.

**La Primitiva** — the flagship. The same 6-from-49 matrix, drawn Monday, Thursday and Saturday at €1 a line, with a €2 million guaranteed floor, the Joker add-on, and a Categoría Especial (6 + Reintegro) worth headline jackpots — record €101.7 million. And none of these is **El Gordo de Navidad**, the once-a-year Christmas raffle on pre-printed numbers.

The like-for-like comparison that matters is BonoLoto vs La Primitiva, because the grids are identical: per euro, BonoLoto buys twice as many chances at the same 1-in-13,983,816; per win, La Primitiva pays far more. Daily habit versus bigger draw — that is the whole choice.

BonoLoto is sold at any administración de lotería in Spain and through SELAE's website — which, like most state operators, serves players in Spain. There is no residency requirement to win or claim; what a player abroad needs is someone to buy the ticket.

A closing word on the daily rhythm, because it cuts both ways: a draw every night at fifty cents is the gentlest cadence in lottery play, and also the easiest to let run unwatched.
