La Primitiva

Most international guides describe La Primitiva as a 6-from-49 game and stop there. That is the core, but it misses the two features that decide what your ticket is actually worth.

**The six main numbers.** You pick six from 1 to 49. Matching all six wins the jackpot, at odds of 1 in 13,983,816.

**The Complementario.** After the six main balls, a seventh is drawn from the 43 left in the machine. It has no bearing on the jackpot at all. Its only job is to upgrade a five-number match into the second prize category — so it decides whether a near-miss is worth a lot or a little.

**The Reintegro.** This is the one that surprises people. It is a single digit from 0 to 9, printed on your ticket rather than chosen by you, and drawn from a separate machine. Match it on its own and your €1 stake is refunded. That is why the overall chance of getting something back from a La Primitiva line is about 1 in 10 — the great majority of those returns are the Reintegro handing your stake back, not a prize in any meaningful sense.

**And the Categoría Especial.** Introduced on 8 November 2012, this is the six main numbers *plus* the Reintegro, at 1 in 139,838,160 — exactly ten times harder than the six-number jackpot, because it is the jackpot multiplied by a one-in-ten digit. It is the number that appears in headlines, and it is not the same thing as winning the jackpot.

Every category except the fifth and the Reintegro is pari-mutuel — a set share of the prize fund split among that category's winners — so the amounts move with sales and winner counts.

All of these are computed from the official 6/49 matrix. The shape worth noticing: the jump from the 4ª to the 3ª category is a factor of more than fifty, so the realistic ceiling for ordinary play is a four-number match paying a modest pari-mutuel amount, with the three-number €8 and the Reintegro doing most of the actual work.

La Primitiva prizes fall under the gravamen especial created by Ley 16/2012, which applies to SELAE, ONCE and Cruz Roja prizes and their EU/EEA equivalents.

The rule is often quoted as "Spain taxes lottery wins at 20%", which materially overstates it. The first **€40,000** of a prize is exempt outright, and 20% is withheld only on the amount above that. A €50,000 win is taxed on €10,000 — €2,000 withheld, €48,000 paid, an effective rate of 4%. On a €40,000 win, nothing is taken at all.

The exempt threshold has moved over the years — €10,000 for prizes from July 2018, €20,000 for 2019, €40,000 from 1 January 2020 — so older articles quoting a lower figure are simply out of date. The exemption attaches per winning ticket rather than per winner, which is why Spanish syndicates split tickets rather than prizes.

SELAE applies the withholding when it pays, regardless of where the winner lives. For a non-resident, whether any of it can be reclaimed depends on their country's double taxation treaty with Spain, usually via a Modelo 210 filing. That is a real mechanism, but it is a claim to be made and evidenced rather than an exemption applied automatically — worth a Spanish adviser's time on a large prize.

La Primitiva is the oldest lottery in Spain still running in a recognisable form, with roots in the Lotería Primitiva established in 1763 and the modern draw relaunched in 1985.

The record jackpot is **€101.7 million**, won in October 2015 — the largest single-ticket prize in the game's history and one of the largest ever paid by a Spanish lottery outside the Christmas draw.

Because there is no jackpot cap, an unwon top prize rolls from its guaranteed €2 million floor and keeps accumulating. With three draws a week, rolls end more often than in the twice-weekly European games, which is why La Primitiva's jackpots are usually modest and occasionally enormous.

SELAE runs several lotteries and the names overlap confusingly, so it is worth separating them.

**La Primitiva** — this game. Six numbers from 49, three draws a week (Monday, Thursday, Saturday), €1 a line, rolling jackpot from €2 million.

**El Gordo de Navidad** — the Sorteo Extraordinario de Navidad, the Christmas lottery drawn once a year on 22 December. Not a pick-your-numbers game at all: a raffle on pre-printed numbers sold in shares, with fixed prizes. It shares the "El Gordo" nickname and nothing else.

A final word on proportion. 1 in 13,983,816 is the best jackpot chance of any game we cover apart from Lotofácil, and the €40,000 tax exemption is genuinely generous — but it is still a very long way from likely, and the 1-in-10 "any return" figure is mostly your own euro coming back.
